In 2024, the Black U.S. Senators in United States History since 1870 poster was created to highlight the contributions of African American legislators in the U.S. Senate. Their service and legacy were made possible by the Reconstruction Era Amendments—the 13th, 14th, and 15th—which ended legal slavery, established citizenship and equal protection under the law, and expanded the right to vote.
REDEFINING FREEDOM: A Virtual Town Hall brings this history to life by connecting students directly with leaders who embody that legacy today. Through dialogue with current representatives of American democracy, students will explore how the principles established during Reconstruction continue to shape the nation—and how informed voices, civic engagement, and leadership can influence its future.
Students who attend the town hall and complete the accompanying worksheet activity are eligible to receive community service hours. Please register below for additional details.
